Singapore has a fascinating cultural history. Part of this history can be appreciated on a guided walk through Kampong Gelam – also known as the “Arab Street” precinct, after the Gulf immigrants who first inhabited the quarter and later became wealthy business tycoons. The Sultan Mosque towering over the precinct lends gravitas to this enticing network of little streets and side-lanes, where kris shops, jamu herbal medicine dealers and hajj provisioners all ply their wares. A fascinating conclusion to the walk is at the Malay Heritage Centre, opened in 2005 and housed in the former Kampong Gelam Palace.
