A barge offers scenic canal tours, at Brisbane's Southbank recreation park

The Brisbane of old was a steamy, seedy river-port, like something out of a Joseph Conrad novel. The Brisbane River didn’t even have a mouth - just a few broken teeth. Outdoor dining and promenading were virtually unknown. This was a city of a million people with an attitude problem. Nowadays, all this has changed. Brisbane has succeeded like no other Aussie city in re-inventing itself. Confident and sophisticated, with streetscapes of palm-trees and canvas sails, Brisbane has at last discovered its own identity.
