Long-time haunt of the bohemian set, today Byron Bay is a vibrant melting pot of celebrities in search of peace and quiet, New Agers, sea-changers, writers, painters and keen surfers.
Located at the top of New South Wales, not far from the Queensland border, many people come to Byron Bay to escape.
On my first visit I left behind a stressful job in Sydney for a short sojourn with friends. We woke before dawn and made our way to catch the sunrise at Cape Byron Lighthouse, located high on a windswept headline, the most easterly point in mainland Australia. Two large sea turtles played in the clear, sapphire-coloured ocean below. A lone surfer paddled out to a break off one side of the cape, while a couple in the early throes of romance strolled hand in hand along Watego’s Beach.
