The volcanic Krakatoa Island is now staging a menacing re-growth |
It’s not for nothing that they call Carita “The Beach of Stories”. Lying directly opposite the volcanic Mount Krakatoa, this beach still bears the memories of the greatest explosion in recorded history. While Carita mercifully escaped the tsunami of 17 July 2006, the residents still recall family anecdotes of the great Krakatoa eruption of 1883.
On a clear day, Carita Beach affords a superb view of Anak Krakatau: “son of Krakatoa”. This long‑dormant but now active volcanic island started rising from the sea 80 years ago. on the very spot where the old Krakatoa erupted. Anak Krakatau is now nearly 200 metres high, and is again spurting fire and cinders.
