The ancient Cité of Carcassonne is brilliantly floodlit at night

Back in the Middle Ages, this would not have been much of a place to die. Your choices would have been plague, starvation or burning at the stake. The Cathars, a "heretical" Christian sect who made the walled city of Carcassonne their home, did not exactly look forward to a bright future. But nowadays Carcassonne, in the south of France, draws a steady stream of tourists, attracted by this showcase of ancient French culture. The ancient Cité  was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998.
