Delta Dawn - along the Mekong in Vietnam

By: Thomas E King

The mighty Mekong River is the shimmering lifeline of southern Vietnam. (Right) A river market outside Can Tho allows delta dwellers to easily buy and sell goods. (Far Right) There are great views of the countryside from the Cave Pagoda on Sam Mountain.

Originating in the Tibetan highlands the mighty Mekong River nears the end of its 4500 km journey as it flows through the extensive delta lands of southern Vietnam.

Luxurious river boats that regularly depart Ho Chi Minh City, the former Saigon, ply the life-giving waterway.

Travellers can also go by road to explore towns like Can Tho with its lively floating market.  Locals come here to get goods and gossip.

Farther west, Chau Doc, a small town close to the Cambodian border is dotted with mosques, pagodas and temples including a lovely Buddhist shrine on the side of Sam Mountain.

An illustrated feature on the delta lands of southern Vietnam can be written on assignment from 1000 to 2000 words, depending upon editorial requirements.
