Edinburgh’s New Town remains arguably the world’s finest example of Georgian town planning and architecture, but two centuries on, the austere terraced townhouses and the luxuriant private parks wear a comfortable patina. Worlds away from the tenements and ‘wynds’ of the Old Town, these are the streets, the bars and cafes inhabited by the cast of characters created by Alexander McCall Smith, or by Ian Rankin’s Inspector Rebus.
