Fairways to the Pharaohs

By: Thomas E King

The massive Cheops Pyramid dwarfs players on the 9 hole Mena House Oberoi Golf Course. (Above) The crinkled mountains of the Sinai back drop many holes at the Jolie Ville Golf & Resort Sharm el Sheikh. (Right) The desert beyond Cairo has become a sporting oasis since the Mirage City Golf Club opened a decade ago. (Far Right)

Little more than a decade ago there were just three golf courses in Egypt.  Today there are nearly 20 fields of green.  More designer layouts are either under construction or on drawing boards as an increasing number of visitors take to the tees in an emerging golf destination.

The Maritim Jolie Ville Golf & Resort Sharm el Sheikh has an adjoining 6021 yard championship course where a memorable game can be enjoyed in a dramatic setting combining mountains, desert and sea.

Cairo has the pharaoh’s share of courses in the country with seven grassy playgrounds welcoming hackers to hard hitters.

Opened in November 1999 after being carved from the desert beyond Cairo, the 18 hole 7108 yard course at the Mirage City Golf Club is the sporting sensation at the 428 room JW Marriott Hotel.

Closer to the city on the circa 1889 Mena House Oberoi Golf Club, golfers can be distracted by the unusual setting.  The 40 acre tree lined golf oasis is back dropped by the mass of the Cheops Pyramid!

An illustrated feature on the golf scene in Egypt can be written on assignment from 1000 to 2000 words, depending upon editorial requirements.  A short ‘sidebar’ or a dedicated tourism or destination feature can also be written on Cairo, Alexandria and Sharm el Sheikh.
