Chittal or spotted deer buck, Corbett Tiger Reserve

by Philip Game

India's oldest and largest tiger reserve is the legacy of the last of the Great White Hunters.

In Corbett Tiger Reserve you can spend days tracking a tiger, or casting a rod for the golden mahseer.  Tigers may prove elusive, but park director Rajiv Bhatari can explain why this is as it should be.

The hill people of Kumaon remember Jim Corbett, celebrated tiger hunter turned conservationist in the years before Indian independence,  not only by the national park and tiger reserve which bear his name, but for a wider legacy including the creation of a model, sustainable community on his own estate.
