Flowers in the Mire

The Peruvian capital Lima is not quite as bad as the guide-books say. Sure, a number of buildings are somewhere between decrepit and totally collapsed; an odour of decaying fish hangs over the city; and in many districts poverty lives side by side with squalor. But the precinct of  Miraflores is like a garden of flowers in the mire. This gracious and upmarket district is a fascinating and stimulating place to hang out, particularly if you're well-heeled and/or thin-souled.
