The suns sets over a moai figure at Tahai, on the western shore of Rapa Nui (Easter Island) |
The Rapa Nui people (descendants of the Polynesian Islanders who originally settled Easter Island about 500 AD) were nearly wiped out during the 19th Century. By the year 1900, a 111 mere islanders were left. Today, however, the Rapa Nui people are thriving, their language is being taught in schools, and their ancient culture is a source of new-found pride.
