A view over Hamilton Island and the Whitsundays (Queensland, Australia) |
When Captain Cook sailed through what are now the Whitsunday Islands, in mid-north Queensland, he little realised that this nature-blessed archipelago would become one of the world’s finest marine playgrounds. From notes in Cook’s logbook, it seems that the crew sailed within two kilometres of Hamilton Island.
Over 200 years on, Hamilton Island has matured into the jewel of the Whitsunday Islands. Its stunning harbourside setting grabs all your senses at once.
Just one blemish blots the landscape of Hamilton Island - the Reef Hotel, a literally over-the-top block towering 19 storeys high, so obviously out-of-place in this pristine environment that even the staff wince at its mention.
