The confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers, from a lookout in Harpers Ferrry |
This today-peaceful West Virginian town, lying at the junction of two rivers and three States, is where and two very different cultures converge. Harpers Ferry village, today so peaceful, was in the 1800s the touch-stone for incidents which eventually launched the American Civil War.
The epic TV series "The Civil War", gave a good idea of what this conflict was all about. Although it's now over 130 years since the final skirmishes were fought, the Civil War remains a phenomenon of global interest. In the words of Shelbey Cooke, the presenter of “The Civil War” series, “if you want to understand 20th Century America, you have to understand the Civil War.”
One of the best places to start is Harpers Ferry.
