The Chinese love to soak up the sun on Hainan Island. |
I had always wondered where the Chinese go when they want to holiday at home – and now I know. White sandy beaches, warm languid waters and tall swaying coconut trees. And yes it really can be found in China. Hainan, the largest ocean island and the southernmost point of China has long been known as the “Hawaii of the Orient”, and in fact shares the same latitude as its US’ namesake. In centuries past, political exiles were banished here, before the Japanese took up occupancy. Today however, Hainan is one of China’s fastest emerging holiday destinations.
