You just can’t get away from him. In the Danish city of Odense, his birthplace, the name is ubiquitous. There are boulevards, statues, even carparks named after him. Following the commemoration in 2005 of the 200th anniversary of the author’s birth, the totally refurbished Hans Christian Andersen Museum has re-opened. While it is said that the much-travelled Andersen left Odense at an early age because he was bored with the place, this low-key city somehow finds a place in the heart, as a town with hidden attitude that is well worth digging out
