Bohemia, in the Czech Republic, beckons with haystacks, ancient town squares, Gothic spires andbell towers, chateaux, gabled houses, frescoes, music and lazy rivers to boot. Startlingly cheaper and far less stressed than the Czech capital, with largely unspoiled nature, the great primary expanse of the Czech Republic – the largest of its three regions - conjures up a mood once evoked by classic fairy tales.

Most of those who decamp Prague for the south have one of two things on their mind – beer or spas. Enthusiasts of the former may think they have died and gone to heaven, for Bohemia is where much the very language of ale seems to have been cast Cesky Krumlov - with its stirring and sweeping views, its intimacy and inescapable sense of romance and charm - has a thriving bed & breakfast culture, with quality pensions abounding, as well as a number of quite classy small hotels.
