Is there anything more beguiling than the sight of a wooden dhow sailing into the sunset? In reality, the image may be a little more romantic than the reality. Life aboard these ancient vessels was cramped, difficult and dangerous. Today Gujarat in India, Sur (Oman) and Nungwi (Zanzibar) are the last domains of the dhow, a traditional craft still constructed in these ports from solid hand-hewn beams.
