Isaan, in the north-east of Thailand,  is one of the most little-known parts of the country, with an amazing amalgam of Thai, Lao, Khmer and Vietnamese cultures. Highlights of the region include the ancient ruins of Ban Chiang, the Lao-influenced temple of Wat Phra That Phanom and of course the mighty Mekong River. Visitors can cruise along the Mekong, visiting the Indochina markets of Nong Khai and Nakhon Pathon
