It's wild - but is it food?

By: Graham Simmons

Huhu grubs are a specialty, at the Hokitika Wildfoods Festival (above); Festival goers (right).

The Hokitika Wildfoods Festival, on the rugged West Coast of New Zealand's South Island, takes gastronomy to the very limit (and maybe beyond). Included on the menu are emu, fish eyes, grasshoppers, horsemeat, huhu grubs, ostrich, pigs’ ears, possum, scorpions, seagulls and swordfish. If you survive that dietary wallop, then try getting your stomach around the kava, moonshine and other near-lethal home brews on offer. The Next Hokitika Wildfoods Festival will be on 8 March, 2008.
