We’re flying in for a beer at Australia’s most famed Outback pub, the Birdsville Hotel. The wind is howling past our aircraft at a cracking pace, covering the small township in a cloud of dust. As we do a u-turn and head for the landing strip, the arid, lifeless landscape stretches seemingly forever. Yet here in the middle of nothingness, it is anything but monotonous. An Aboriginal painter’s palette of ochre, browns, earthy reds and gold is etched with dots, squiggles and swirls. In the afternoon light you can see the shadow of the plane – insignificant in its immense surroundings - dancing across the Simpson Desert as the Thompson River and the faint line of the famous Birdsville Track comes into view. The whistle-stop tour of Birdsville is our last stopover in a 10,000 kilometre journey which has seen us take in the remarkable beauty, open spaces and great contrast that is Australia....
