Rolls of jute on display in Dundee's Verdant Works jute museum |
The era of the jute industry in Dundee, when a handful of entrepreneurs grew rich on the sweat of thousands of factory labourers working in appalling conditions, has been turned on its head. Just when the industry had dismantled itself, selling off all its machinery to factories in India and Bangladesh, a swing back to natural fibres has seen the jute industry thrive on the Indian sub-continent. All this is documented at Dundee’s new “Verdant Works” jute museum.
