From beginnings as artillery spotting platforms in WW1, to weapons of terror, these enormous airships eventually found their way onto the air routes of the world well before long haul aircraft could fill the role.
When the Graf Zeppelin circumnavigated the world in 1929, the airships were the graceful heroes of the sky, but filled with explosive hydrogen gas, many predicted they were a disaster waiting to happen. The critics were right.
