The city of Manaus, capital of the Brazilian province of Amazonas, is growing so fast that no-one can keep up with the changes taking place. "A million residents", say the  guide-books. "1.7 to 2 million", says a representative from a city tourist office. With only air and river access, Manaus has for the last ten years been a duty-free port and an important manufacturing centre, with Amazon-based tourism also taking off in a big way.
