Getting a permit to visit the border state of Arunachal Pradesh, in the far NE of India, is nearly as difficult as hitching a ride to the Moon. But the rewards are commensurate - including superb mountain scenery, visits to remote Buddhist monasteries (including the world’s second largest, after Lhasa’s Potala), and encounters with the laidback Monpa peoples. Most tangible of all is the aura of mystery and wonder that envelops the region.
