Movie Island

Malta is overlooked by most travellers. But the sun-kissed Mediterranean island group has long been known to sun worshippers and filmmakers alike - Troy, Gladiator, The Count of Monte Cristo and Swept Away, have all been shot here.  So too was Midnight Express at Fort St Elmo and Popeye, the set of which still stands on the coastline at Anchor Bay. For a fee, you can take a tour of the set at Popeye Village, aka Sweethaven, built in 1980 for the filming of the movie, starring Robin Williams. 

In addition to tourists, an international roster of filmmakers including Guy Ritchie and Ridley Scott have been lured to Malta, in part, for its natural beauty – the light, the iridescent blue waters and that luminescent sandstone. The stunning Golden Bay and Ghajn Tuffieha Bay (a location for Troy) are two ideal spots for swimming, windsurfing, sailing or merely taking in the island's splendor.

The advantage to filming in Malta is that no location is usually further than a 20 minute drive away……….
