The south of Oman, with its at times tropical climate, is an anomaly. Besides offering a string of pristine white-sand beaches, southern Oman is the home of the ancient frankincense trade. The ruins of Khor Rouri, now being restored, take the visitor back more than 2,000 years, to when this city was the centre for trade between Oman, Yemen and India. Even today, markets in the south of Oman and in the Omani capital Muscat sell the finest quality frankincense, together with colourful incense-burners.
