   Everyone on a wildlife safari knows the first rule is to never get out of the vehicle. So what are we doing walking stealthily through the undergrowth like combat soldiers – behind indeed an armed tracker and specialist ranger?

With a program that also includes such ‘hands-on’ experiences as rifle skills training, rhino-darting, sleeping out under the stars and tracking leopard with telemetry, Tricia Welsh finds that an innovative four-day ‘bush skills’ adventure on Phinda Private Game Reserve in KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa can somewhat spoil it for regular safaris .
