A glaucus gull sweeps low over Magdalenenfjord |
When a Russian submarine was stranded on the bottom of the Barents Sea near Murmansk recently, the attention of the whole world was drawn to this remote region – a place that is so far north that it’s nearly south. But Murmansk (at around 69 degrees N) seems positively tropical by comparison with the Svalbard (Spitsbergen) Islands of Norway. Lying between 78 and 81 degrees N, these islands are further from the south of Norway than Oslo is from Africa. One of the best ways of exploring this remote archipelago is by aboard an expedition cruise vessel.
