The Afghan Mosque in Larapinta, a suburb of Alice Springs

The new Afghan Mosque, in Alice Springs, is spiritual home to 35 Moslem families, descendants of the Afghan cameleers who once were largely responsible for opening up the heartland of Australia. Today, many of the descendants of former cameleers drive taxis - a form of transport faster but somewhat less romantic than the camel trains of earlier days.
