The most remarkable aspect of Taiwan is that it appears less concerned than does the rest of the world about its identity, status and future. There is a dynamism that is quite breathtaking. But no less so than its Pacific ‘Ring of Fire’ seismic zone - a wide range of volcanic hot, cold and mud springs and their attendant rejuvenating powers, rift valleys, marble canyons, rich forests, rugged coastlines, dramatically eroded rock formations, lush river basins, and mountains that cover a third of the island. Then there’s the massive Foguanshan Monastery, one of the world’s most acclaimed museums, a cascade of orchids and a restaurant selling nothing but buffalo dishes.
