Villagers play petanque, at the foot of Mount Yasur on Tanna Island

It's not every day you get to narrowly avoid falling into a volcano. The scene is the rim of the crater of Mt Yasur, a seething, still intensely active volcano on the island of Tanna, in southern Vanuatu. The sensation of sheer vertigo, the feeling of almost plummeting into the abyss, is so real that it nearly becomes self-actualising. Tanna Island also offers a fascinating window on a little-known culture
