The troglodyte realm of Cappadocia

Panoramic view of a surreal Cappadocian valley

Cappadocia - the second most visited area in Turkey after the ancient city of Istanbul - is kilometre upon kilometre, valley upon valley of surrealistic volcanic formations - fretted ravines, 'fairy chimneys', erratically sculpted rock pinnacles and cones, underground cities, rock-hewn churches and monk cells; all bathed in changing tones of warm red and gold, cool green and grey. A breath-stopping troglodyte realm beyond even the imagination of a Disney or Spielberg. A journey from the city of Nevsehir through the Goreme and Zelve Valleys, the edifices of Uchisar and Ortahisar, the Kaymakli and Derinkuyu underground cities, and beyond.
