On the Upper Track / Paper Tiger |
by Philip Game
Stumbling downstairs in the chill, I squat over a communal trough dividing the floor of a cement-walled stall. Head and shoulders above the partition looms John, a travelling companion accustomed to somewhat more privacy in his California bathroom. From the unspeakable to the sublime, we lift our gaze to the five thousand-metre snow-dusted crags blushing musk pink in the first blush of dawn.
Tigers leap where angels fear to tread in China’s Tiger Leaping Gorge, one of the world’s deepest defiles. Meanwhile, the Feng family are out feeding their pigs and goats - and frying up breakfast pancakes for those privileged to share these mountains with them.
