Time for Tallinn

By: Thomas E King

Medieval music and exotic dishes based on ancient recipes are featured at the Old Hansa Restaurant in Tallinn. As well there is an adjoining shop that sells items replicated from the Middle Ages. Vendors dressed in period costume add to the chram. (Far Right) Viewpoints from the Upper Town provide panoramas over Tallinn’s Old Town and the busy harbour. This is also a spectacular place to watch the sun go down over this special city. (Upper Right) Many medieval buildings encircling the atmospheric Town Hall Square have been transformed into charming shops and delightful restaurants. During summer there is also an arts and crafts market in the square that is popular with visitors from around the world. (Lower right) The Russian Orthodox Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is filled with beautiful mosaics and icons. Concerts are regularly organised in a number of the architecturally stunning cathedrals and churches.

Tallinn’s terrific Old Town tantalises travellers with a mix of medieval charm and modern comforts.

The apex of excitement is found in the Raekoja.  The Town Hall Square has been the beating heart of life in the Estonian capital since the 11th century when it was a thriving marketplace.

It has the same role today as the much photographed massive square is ringed by tiny shops and gourmet restaurants that have delicious views of the imposing Town Hall, the only surviving Gothic town hall in northern Europe.

An illustrated feature on the Old Town of Tallinn can be written on assignment from 1000 to 2000 words, depending upon editorial requirements.

A feature or sidebar can also be written about the unique cultural attractions on the other Baltic capitals of Vilnius and Riga.
