The old capital of Sabah (Malaysia), Sandakan is firmly in the development spotlight, in light of its proposed official declaration as a city in 2008. Sandakan was the trailhead for the infamous Sandakan Death March of World War II, which led to the deaths of over 2,400 Australian and British troops. The new Sandakan Memorial Park commemorates this tragic event.
