Tortoise Rock in the Gorkhi-Terelj National Park is a visitor favourite. (Top Right) Stay in round tents called gers to learn about the nomadic rural life in Mongolia. (Far Right) A Mongolian rider gallops through the spectacular Terelj countryside. |
The Gorkhi-Terelj National Park, one of the most important nature reserves in Mongolia, is true wilderness country where yaks meander and stocky Mongolian horses graze.
The former are beasts of burden; the latter gallop about the stark but beautiful countryside with riders eager to demonstrate their equestrian prowess.
There’s an old saying that “Mongolians are born in the saddle”. It’s only after seeing toddlers trotting on trusted steeds that this saying comes into perspective. Until they reach the ‘ripe old age’ of 4 or 5 young riders may be accompanied their fathers who rides astride a richly decorated saddle, a possession that could well be the family’s most valued item.
An illustrated feature on the Gorkhi-Terelj National Park can be written from 1000 to 2000 words after assignment depending upon editorial requirements. A sidebar or dedicated feature can also be provided on Ulaanbaatar.
