Underwater restaurant Submarino in the City of Arts and Sciences, Valencia |
As host to the America's Cup from May to July, Valencia is poised to accommodate some three million visitors this year. They'll find there's more to it than just oranges. It also gave the world paella and Lladro. Founded in 138BC as a retirement place for former legionnaires in the Roman Army (Julius Caesar and Pompey lived there), it owes much to the four centuries of occupation by the Moors including an appealing mix of Hispano-Moorish architecture that sits alongside the stunning avant-garde designs by the city's favourite son, Santiago Calatrava.
