Dog Gone

You need a holiday - well, maybe Spot (or Fido or Tiddles) does too. Sheriden Rhodes takes a tour...

Planning a holiday, but don’t know what to do with the furry family member? For many, dogs (and cats for that matter) are part of the family and more and more owners are including pets in their holiday plans. “In fact many people plan their holidays around their pets,” says Lisa Goldsmith, marketing manager with online booking engine Pet Stayz. Not to mention the high cost of kennels, pet stitters, and the distress of leaving your best canine buddy behind. Thankfully, growing numbers of accommodation providers have heeded the call, offering animal friendly stays at hotels, motels, B&Bs and self contained holiday homes throughout Australia.

To Market, To Market

Australia is home to some of the world's best country markets. From the grand dame of craft...

It's early Sunday morning, and the tantalising smell of juicy sausages sizzling on the grill wafts over the crowd of city slickers who have arrived to feast their eyes on the sights, sounds and smells of the bustling Yarra Valley Farmer's Market. Inside the hall at Yering Station Winery, it's a treat for the senses.Buckets of bright yellow daffodils, tables groaning with plump pumpkins, bags of just picked broccoli, fennel and bunches of baby carrots are displayed in such an appetising fashion it would make your local grocer weep.

A bowl of ripe, sun kissed strawberries and creamy meringues tempts corporate wives dreaming of an easy finale to their next dinner party. Bags of rosy apples and perfect pears jostle for attention, alongside flavoursome tomatoes, jars of locally made honey and trays of golden smoked trout. While the concept of produce markets is nothing new, the scene found at the Yarra Valley Farmer's Market is being played out across the country in growing regularity. Sheriden Rhodes discovers six of the best.

Canberra, a living art space

Australia's capital bristles with artworks - both good and bad

The whole of Canberra seems to be an art space on a grand scale, with street sculptures enlivening a giant man-made naturescape. This theme is highlighted by the new National Museum of Australia, which sits superbly on its Acton Peninsula site. A number of excellent private galleries complement the art scene. The new Parliament House features a vast collection of sculptures and paintings, some tucked away in rarely-seen nooks. Floral art is amply on display too: Canberra's annual Floriade festival, the biggest such event outside the Netherlands, attracts over half a million visitors each year.

The Poachers' Trail

Got a couple of days to spare? Wind down unearthing the ACT's rural riches.

Author John Burroughs once said;

"I still find each day too short for all the thoughts I want to think, all the walks I want to take, all the books I want to read, and all the friends I want to see."

Watching Melbourne's rush-hour traffic, spray emitting off rain-slicked tyres, I found myself relating to his frustrated cry about there never being enough hours in a day. With deadlines banked up endlessly before me, I hankered for a sojourn in the country. I dreamed of pure air, the smell of freshly mown meadow hay, crisp laundered sheets and ambles down country lanes. I longed for a comfy lounge and roaring fire so I could finish the neglected book on my bedside table, and dreamed of gazing heavenward at the Milky Way – with nothing but a chorus of frogs to disturb my thoughts.

So, when I heard about the Poacher's Trail, I knew it was the answer to a stressed-out career gal's silent yet reverent prayer for time to recharge, reflect and restore the soul.
