Don’t worry, be happy in Havana, Cuba

As Fidel Castro fades from the Cuban stage, now is the best time to visit

The country that gave us the best cigars, top-shelf rum and rhythmic salsa music is located ideally in the middle of the Caribbean. Yet for the past 50 years it’s been considered a no-go zone – certainly for Americans - and hence is one of the most difficult countries to visit. With ex-President Fidel Castro's health failing and President Raul Castro now turned 78, there is a sense of urgency that now is the time to visit -- and soon!

Cuba Calls

There is a constant, inescapable sensuality to the entire Cuban experience.

For all the crumbling decay, the tarnished and faded glamour, and the shortages and sacrifices there is nothing dormant or moribund about Cuba. Take Latin vibrancy and pride, wind it up a few notches with classic Cuban machismo, stir well with history, intrigue and uncertainty, garnish with a siege mentality, serve warm with Spanish style and you have the very core of the Caribbean, its only truly essential destination. A brief overview of one of the world's hottest destinations, with touches of Hemingway, Monte Cristo No. 4s, Tropicana dancers, daiquiris and rampant music.

Cities Of Sound

Glenn A. Baker presents a Bakers' Dozen of cities worthy of cruising through, with all antennae...

Every city leaves a stamp upon our consciousness. Some engage with their architecture, some dazzle with the depth of their hospitality, some compel with their commerce. We come home with a head and a heart full of what they have to offer.

Music in Havana

Though fine hotels, grand views, good air and delectable dishes top most traveller's checklists, seductive sounds may well leave the most indelible imprint of all. Music defines a city's character and evokes its history. It reveals its tone, exposes its soul; indeed it is a city's heartbeat.

Glenn A. Baker presents a Bakers' Dozen of cities worthy of cruising through, with all antennae twitching. The music generated in these burgs ranges through rock, reggae, folk, blues, jazz, township jive, cubop, powerhouse percussion, moody electronica, throat singing, orchestral, sweet soul, salsa, dance, Britbeat, Pacific grooves, metal and Icelandic adventurism. His thirteen mighty musical cities are Memphis, Havana, London, Beijing, Rio De Janeiro, Tokyo, Kingston, Johannesburg, Dublin, Reykjavik, Ulaanbaatar, Chicago and Auckland.
