Climbing to Tiger's Nest

The climb to Tiger’s Nest, in Bhutan, is breath-taking – literally.

The climb to Tiger’s Nest, in Bhutan, is breath- taking – literally. For not only is it a scenic climb to this most revered monastery that clings limpet-like to a sheer rocky cliff face nearly a kilometre up in the clouds above Paro, but at more than 3000 metres above sea level, the air is indeed rarefied, often making breathing difficult. In this tiny paradise in the foot of the Himalayas, where the king has declared a Gross National Happiness index, the climb to Tiger's Nest is a ‘must-try’ attraction for at least half the 15,000 visitors permitted to visit the Kingdom each year.
