Golfers teeing off at two courses in the Baltic nation of Lithuania will also get a quick lesson in geography in addition to enjoying a great game in an emerging golf destination.

The geographic centre of Europe is marked with a plaque located near the 4th and 5th fairways at the appropriately named European Centre Golf Club.

And over at the National Golf Resort the final hole has been crafted to look like Lithuania in miniature.

Meanwhile, the new Le Meridien resort and conference centre outside Vilnius is offering a water ridden romp to all players teeing off its V Club course.

Pure country air, wonderful vistas and a challenging 18 hole course are strong drawcards at the Capitals Golf Course.

There are some 1500 buildings of note in the approximately 1 sq. km medieval centre of the Lithuanian capital.

Their historical and architectural significance were of such global significance that UNESCO bestowed World Heritage status on this unique area in 1994.

The Old Town is literally littered with striking standouts; perhaps most glorious of all is Vilnius Cathedral. This white neo classical masterpiece now glimmers thanks to plaster and paint restorations.

Vilnius: Prague of the North

Shiny new cars from Russia, Belarus, Latvia, Estonia, Poland and a reunified Germany rumble across...

by Philip Game

Men in black, women in mauve parade up and down Pilies gatve, the main artery of the old quarter of Vilnius, the Lithuanian capital. The narrow street has become a catwalk for tourists and locals alike, and you don’t need a crystal ball to pick what's in, this summer.

Vilnius, a veritable Prague of the north, is a city of churches, and the route is lined with spires and onion domes. Lithuanians share a staunchly Catholic heritage with their Polish neighbours, if not with their Baltic brethren to the north.

From the windows of our Old Town apartment most of the city's landmarks are visible, including the wedding cake of St Casimir’s, with its black and gold crown; the baroque spire of St Johns, the university church; and the cream and chocolate tower of an Orthodox church, with its gold piping.

Lands of the Lingering Sun

Come clean. You don't know where the Baltic countries fit on the map, or which capital is which. I didn't either.

The hardest part of deciding to visit these countries is determining where to start. That is, unless your childhood was influenced by family stories of war and peace, the collective memory of the post-War emigre communities.

Yet the only obvious shared characteristics of the Baltic nations are compactness and a tortuous shared history as playthings of the great powers, most recently Russia. Estonians, Latvians and Lithuanians - from north to south - each speak their own languages, tenuously related to any other. There are no dramatic landscapes here, but endless forests and winding rivers, interlocking lakes and the wave-swept sands of the Baltic coast offer plenty of fresh air.
